The Return Trip

Alas, after too short of a stay, it was time for me to return to São João del Rei, and I decided to take the 5:00pm train. The engineers placed the locomotive into a turning wheel and rotated the train 180 degrees for the trip back.

16. The big push: turning the faithful no.42 around

It was a happy yet very emotional scene. Everyone wanted lasting memories to remember; lovers embraced, mothers gathered their children for one last picture together by the train. The aura of this old locomotive was intoxicating.

18. Ready to leave, on the way home

Whistle blowing, the simmering no.42 steamed again. I was happy to have made the trip, not wanting it to end. One thing for certain: I'll be back here again.

19. Going home: time for reflection, with a promise to return
