Belo Horizonte: Nothing Flat!

Belo Horizonte is the capital of Minas Gerais, in south-eastern part of the country, just a short flight away from São Paulo. Flying towards the city, one thing is for certain: there are no flatlands anywhere in this entire state. Up and down the hills, everywhere!!

1. Belo Horizonte from above

When I arrived it was very hazy but the view was pretty amazing. There are many small towns nestled within the neverending undulations of the vast earth below. I wonder what it would be like to live in one of those towns, seems very serene and tranquil from above. I was really surprised to learn that most people in Brazil live in the cities, and even the agricultural communities form urban centers.

2. Close-up of a nearby town

Minas Gerais itself is absolutely huge, a bit larger than France. The heritage of this state was sealed when in the 17th century, vast quantities of gold was found, spurring a massive gold rush. Gold mines were abundant and settlers from Portugal and the rest of Europe soon came in droves. Here, the strong European influence remain today.

3. Beauty as far as the eye can see

In Portuguese, Belo Horizonte means "beautiful horizon." As you can see from the pictures, it is absolutely true!
