War and Peace
Belo Horizonte is much safer than the problematic areas in Rio de Jainero or São Paolo. However,
as with any large city, safety here is not to be taken for granted, as dangerous areas
do exist. Most people here live in gated apartment complexes where security can be better
controlled. It's not uncommon to see electric fences lining the perimeter of houses and apartments.

The city is kept safe by a strong and visible police presence. There are actually two police groups
here: the ubiquitous Policia Militar (uniform service) and the Policia Civil (judicial police.) In
most areas of the city, you'll see Policia Militar officers regularly patrol the streets. Though they
look intimidating and have been criticized for past abuses, most officers here are generally kind and
helpful.

Like all parts of the world today, the war in Iraq is a concern here. Being a Catholic community, the
desire for peace ("paz") and a quick end to the war are strongly expressed by the church and the people.
The pictures of war casualties, the fall of Baghdad, and images of cheering Iraqis celebrating their new
found freedom has had a profound effect to the people I've talked to here.
